Guitars are a very popular musical instrument and many people are interested in learning to play. The first step in playing the guitar is getting a good foundation by learning chords and melody. Once you have a solid base to build off of you can begin to work out songs and create your own tabs. This process can seem daunting for beginner guitarists but with the right guide and practice it is very possible to write out any song you desire.
Start by tracing a guitar outline with Adobe Illustrator. This is the best program to use for this because it has a vector-based drawing system that does not produce pixelated images. This means that you can trace a photo of a guitar and not have to worry about the image being distorted by perspective. This will help you get the most accurate template possible.
Once you have the basic outline of a guitar, it is time to add in the fretboard notes for all six strings. You will need to know the open notes of the sixth and fifth string as well as the first twelve frets of both strings. You can do this by watching video lessons or by copying out of a chord book. It is also a good idea to learn the names of all of the frets on each string so that you can identify them more quickly when reading music.
Next you will want to start writing out some chords. You can do this by following a chord chart or by copying out of a chord or tab book. Chord charts are great for beginners because they will usually only have a single chord written out per bar. Depending on the type of song you are trying to write out, you may want to include more than one chord per bar.
Some chord charts will have the chords broken out into arpeggios. This will make them much easier to play as it will show you where to place your fingers and how to move around the fretboard when changing the chords. Also, this will let you know if any of the chords are a little tricky to play. If so, you can go back and retrain yourself on how to play them.
You can also include lyrics in your guitar outline, if you are working on a vocal tune. This is a great way to help your students to remember the chords and melody of a song. You can also use the lyrics to check if your student’s voice is suited for the song and to give them suggestions for what to sing.
Some songs will have small notes in the music that indicate harmony parts to be sung by other singers. These are called cue notes and are not to be confused with the voicing of the chords in the chord diagram section of the sheet music. This is a common technique to help a vocalist follow the chord diagrams and to be able to sing the harmony lines.
